A grove of birch trees provides a strong ground for this community center, which pulls in the warm brick, smooth concrete, and reflective copper of the surrounding urban context to form its activity pavilions. Inside the main building are breakout areas where friends can play cards or challenge each other to a game of chess. They are bound by velvety fabric, and feature a cast concrete table, with birchwood stools and gathered felt pendants. Â Outside along the path, residents encounter the smallest of the pavilions - a concrete structure that looks like it grew from the earth, corresponding to the soft fabric game areas that are inside the rec center. A large window fronts the path and gives a glimpse to the textural furnishings inside. A woven rug covers the birchwood floor, and large mushroom-like shades provide soft light for a small copper table and velvet stools.
